tensor: Google Pixel 7 series to come powered by the 'Samsung-made' Tensor G2 chip

Google introduced its first in-house silicon -- the Tensor chip -- with the Pixel 6 smartphone series in 2021. The tech giant is now set to unveil the new Pixel 7 lineup along with the Pixel Watch and the Pixel tablet at an event scheduled for October 6. The company has confirmed that the upcoming Pixel smartphones will be powered by the Tensor G2 chip which it has developed in collaboration with Samsung.

Google's official teaser about the Pixel 7 smartphone event confirms the name of the next-generation Tensor chip and the launch date of the same. Moreover, the upcoming chip might also power the Google Pixel 7a smartphone and the rumoured Pixel foldable device in 2023, reports SamMobile.

Tensor chips: Google-Samsung collaboration

Similar to last year's Tensor chip, Google has co-developed the new Tensor G2 chip with the help of Samsung's System LSI division. Apart from this, the latest Google Tensor chip is also manufactured by Samsung Foundry. Moreover, the South Korean tech giant is also rumoured to have started working on the third-gen Tensor chipset, which is likely to be named the G3.

Previously, the new Tensor chip was identified with the model number GS201. However, the new G2 name suggests that Google might continue using the chip as the processor for its upcoming smartphones. The Tensor G2 chip is rumoured to be developed using Samsung Foundry's 4nm architecture and is expected to feature two massive cores, two relatively smaller cores and four Cortex-A55 cores.

Google expects that the new Tensor G2 chip will offer ?even more helpful, personalised features to photos, videos, security and speech recognition."
