samsung: Samsung may be the next OEM to offer satellite connectivity

Huawei became the first OEM to include satellite connectivity to its Mate 50 smartphone. This was then followed by Apple which launched this feature that helps in communications during emergencies for users in the US and Canada in its latest iPhone 14 series. Now, Samsung is reportedly planning to introduce this emergency feature on its next Galaxy S devices. This feature will help users to send SOS texts if they are stuck in a remote place that doesn't have a cellular network.

The rumour didn't specify which Samsung smartphone series will receive this feature for the first time, but hints that the South Korea-based tech giant might include this connectivity option with the Galaxy S23 devices that are expected to launch in early 2023.

How Samsung may be planning to bring satellite connectivity to its devices

According to a report by PhoneArena, Samsung might be planning to use Elon Musk-led Starlink satellites and not Apple's satellite connectivity provider, Globalstar. Initially, Apple was also discussing the possibility of using Starlink but later on decided otherwise. Both Huawei and Apple managed to add emergency satellite connectivity to their latest smartphones using dedicated hardware and Samsung might have to do the same.

How Google is planning to introduce satellite connectivity

Google is also planning to include satellite connectivity to its mobile operating system with the launch of Android 14. Carriers like T-Mobile are also trying to add satellite connectivity to existing devices that don't have dedicated hardware using Starlink's network.

Apple iPhone 14 series satellite connectivity

The satellite connectivity in Apple's newly launched iPhone 14 series is currently available only for US and Canadian users. The service is set to launch in November and will be available without any charges for the first two years. iPhone's new emergency SOS capability sends a straightforward message to emergency services which can take anywhere between 15 seconds to several minutes depending on the overhead conditions.
