Google is delaying the transition of free G Suite legacy customers to paid Workspace plans.
In mid-January, Google stated that customers of its grandfathered "G Suite legacy free edition" will have to change to a premium plan by May 1, 2022. If you don't switch by then, the firm will automatically subscribe and charge you for a tier it deems appropriate when the time comes, but only if you have Google Workspace billing set up.
Many older G Suite customers were upset by the change, and some attorneys are considering bringing a class-action lawsuit as a result. All of the uproar was noticed, and Google hinted in a poll that it might provide "additional options" to legacy users with fewer than ten "seats" in the future months. With the May 1 deadline looming and the free tier still nowhere to be found, the big G has decided to push back the transition date by a month.
You'll have to join a waiting list through the Google Admin panel before June 1, 2022 to try out the free option when it becomes available. This is still rolling out, so don't panic if it doesn't show up right away.
This will allow you to keep using your legacy G Suite account after the new deadline has passed and until the free tier is accessible. Once the free plan is available, Google will give you 60 days to try it out before upgrading to a paid Workspace plan if you don't like it. If you have already upgraded to a paid tier and would like to be added to the waiting list for the impending free option, contact Google support.
