Aging Motorola phones, LineageOS 18.1 introduces a new custom ROM option.

Custom ROM projects like LineageOS may be a terrific way to give an aged smartphone a new lease on life, as we just saw with the Nexus 7's ability to run the brand-new Android 12L thanks to an unauthorised release of LineageOS 19.1. You don't have to wait for your manufacturer to stop supporting your phone to experiment with custom ROMs, and they're just as useful for trying out a new phone with alternative OS. That's where we are today, as we take a look at the new LineageOS 18.1 plans for a couple of recent Motorola phones.

The Moto G 5G (also known as the One 5G Ace), Moto G 5G Plus (also known as the One 5G), and Motorola Edge are all 2020 devices. LineageOS 17.1 was previously available on the Edge, but this is the first time we've seen it on the other two variants.

Considering how LineageOS 18.1 is based on Given that LineageOS 18.1 is based on Android 11, this isn't exactly pushing any of these phones into the modern day, but we'll take what we can get given how poor Moto software update support has been lately. That's especially true for devices that are just getting Lineage support now, especially if it means they'll be more likely to stick around for 19.1. It appears that the first 18.1 builds for each of these phones are still pending, but if you're in a hurry, you can always make your own.
