This may be why second USB-C iPhone got sold for Rs 61,72,015 less than the first one
Creator Gernot Jobstle recently created a waterproof iPhone with a USB-C port. The smartphone went for bidding on eBay and it managed to fetch USD3000 (around Rs 2,24,880). For context, the first modified iPhone X with USB-C port that was created by engineering student Ken Pillionel was sold for USD86,001 (approx 63,96,895). The student reverse-engineered the C94 connector and made changes to the PCB board in order to make the Type-C port work for both charging and data transfer.
The creator also reinforced the USB-C port the same way and it also used super glue to isolate the wiring after soldering the connector to make it waterproof but still it got almost USD83000 less than the original USB-C iPhone. As 9to5Mac suggests, Gernot's iPhone X was only able to get USD3000. First reason being the exclusivity. The iPhone modded by Ken Pillionel was the first iPhone with USB-C, making it a collectors item.
The second reason that the Gernot's modded iPhone X got only USD3,000 is because the regular iPhone X sold by Apple already gets IP67 rating for dust and water resistance. This means that the smartphone can be dropped into a body of water up to a metre deep for half an hour without any modifications. This means the waterproof feature in an iPhone X is not something anyone will spend huge bucks on.
Genot has said that he was inspired by the USB-C iPhone that was created by Ken Pillonel. He also admitted that Pillonel's GitHub page helped him create the waterproof iPhone X with USB-C port. To securely support the USB-C module in the iPhone X, Genot claims that he has created a new custom part that is 20% made of carbon fiber. Genot says that he looks forward to doing more projects like this.
The listing on eBay confirms that there are several limitations in the USB-C iPhone when it comes to functionality. The smartphone does not support fast charging and it gets unidirectional instead of bidirectional support, and there is also no guarantee that it is a prototype.
